Bottle Presentation

A traditional label that includes the minimal, legally required information. The decorations behind the wine’s name seemed somewhat overbearing, however.

Appearance

Medium Ruby.

Nose

Clean, medium(+) intensity nose, with notes of bramble, stewed fruit (blueberries, dark cherries), fennel, vanilla, blackcurrant leaf, tobacco leaf, cigar box, violets, grilled tomatoes and pepper. We would consider this a youthful wine.

Palate

Dry, with medium(+) acidity, drying, medium(+) tannins, and high alcohol. The medium(+) flavour intensity offered notes of ripe, dark fruit (blackcurrants, blackberry, and cherry), cassis, dark chocolate, anise, red licorice, garrigue, black pepper, and blackcurrant leaf.

Finish

An enjoyable, long finish, with enduring dark fruit notes.

Overall Impressions

It didn’t take long for us to finish off this wine, and we wished we had purchased another bottle. If we had, we would’ve poured it then and there. We found the wine well balanced, with excellent length, and very good intensity and complexity. Overall, we’d consider Bodega Vizcarra’s 2016 JC Vizcarra a very good wine.

We enjoyed this red wine with filet mignon and grilled vegetables (zucchini, red onions, and asparagus). It paired beautifully with our meal, matching the flavour intensity while staying balanced and offering plenty of complex notes.

You could drink this wine now and enjoy it. Saying that, you could also cellar it for at least 3-5 years to allow more tertiary notes to develop.

The 2016 JC Vizcarra is a fantastic wine, and it reminds us why we have developed an affinity for Spain’s Ribera Del Duero region. The Bodega Vizcarra is now on our must-visit list whenever we can travel to the region. We’re already on the lookout for more wines from this winery and, of course, future JC Vizcarra vintages!
