Bottle Presentation
The bold red font and black shovel give it a distinct, somewhat old-fashioned appearance.
Appearance
Pale lemon.
Nose
Clean, pronounced intensity nose, with notes of peach, ripe pink grapefruit, tangerine, petrol, wild honey, honeysuckle, and minerality. We’d consider this a youthful wine.
Palate
Off-dry, full bodied, with high acidity, low alcohol, and pronounced flavour intensity. The palate offered more peach, pink grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, minerality, and honeysuckle.
Finish
A long, satisfying finish, with enduring citrus notes.
Overall Impressions
We were impressed by Redstone’s 2018 Limestone Vineyard South Riesling. For us, the mouth-watering acidity, peach and citrus notes, and petrol aroma came right on cue, showcasing why Niagara continues to build a reputation for producing top-quality Rieslings.
We enjoyed this off-dry beauty with Thanksgiving dinner. It proved to be a hit with our guests (heck, we had to open another bottle of it!), and it paired beautifully with an array of savoury and sweet dishes, including a squash dish topped with caramelized granny smith apples. As a bonus, the gorgeous, mouth-watering acidity cut through our rich, homemade turkey gravy.
This 2018 Redstone Riesling is made in a Kabinett style if you follow the German labelling system, and it would more than hold its own against anything carrying a Pradikatswein label.
We’d consider this a very good wine. As much as we enjoyed it now, we suspect it will be even better in a few years, when more tertiary flavours and aromas develop. As a bonus, the screwcap means we don’t need to worry about cork taint if we cellar the wine for a few years.
Ratings
Overall Rating: 92/100.
E-Wine rating: 4.5/5. We’d purchase a half-case of this Riesling, keeping three or four in our cellar, and drinking the other two immediately.
Value: 5/5. At $18.95 CAD, the 2018 Redstone Riesling represents outstanding value for the quality.
