Producer: McPrice Myers

Region/Country: Paso Robles, California, USA

Grape Varietal(s): Syrah (79%), Grenache (13%), Mourvèdre (8%)

Consumed: At home

Recommended By: Received it as a gift as part of a Wine Collective package

Bottle Presentation: Simple, elegant label with a poetic twist

Appearance: Medium-to-deep purple-ruby

Nose: Pronounced nose, with dark jammy fruit (blueberry and raisin), spices, and green/cedar notes.

Taste: A light-to-medium bodied red blend with medium, grippy tannins, and high acidity. Predominant flavors included blueberries, dark plums, black pepper, cedar and dirt/earth. Of note, the 15.2% alcohol content made its presence known.

Finish: Medium finish, with enduring earth and black pepper notes.

Overall Impression: We applaud McPrice Myers for producing this interesting red blend, which emphasizes the “S” (Syrah) in GSM (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre). Although not overly complex, we enjoyed the dark fruit and spicy flavours. The high alcohol content combined with the cedar notes and grippy tannins suggests this wine would benefit from additional time in bottle, which, hopefully, would round it out and improve the balance. At $66 CAD per bottle, we found it expensive, knowing how competitive the market can be. As with similar blends, food pairings would include savoury dishes, grilled red meats (lamb or beef), and dark chocolate.
