Wine Review – 2015 Malagouzia Matsa

2015 Malagouzia MatsaAn easy-to-drink Greek white wine using an indigenous varietal, Malagouzia…

Name: Malagouzia Matsa

Vintage: 2015

Producer: Roxani Matsa Estate, Boutari Wines

Region/Country: Attica, Greece

Grape Varietal(s): Malagouzia

Consumed: At home

Recommended By: The duty-free shop at the Athens airport

Cost: Unknown (it was a gift)

Bottle Presentation: A clean, classy label written in Greek (we appreciated the English translation on the back of the bottle).

Appearance: Medium gold.

Nose: A clean, medium nose, with lemon, lime, and a hint of lychee.

Taste: Dry, medium-bodied white wine, with high acidity and prominent mineral notes, including slate and chalk. We also tasted some white grapefruit rind in the back end.

Finish: A long, enduring finish of minerals and white grapefruit rind.

Overall Impression: Although not overly complex, we appreciated this wine’s balance, as well as the opportunity to try an indigenous Greek varietal. As expected, it paired very well with an array of Greek foods, including chicken and pork souvlaki, spanakopita, rice, and salad. More mineral notes emerged in the Malagouzia with the food. Based on this offering, we would definitely try another indigenous Greek white wine.

Rating (from 70 to 100): 87/100
