A good Priorat on the front end, but…

Bottle Presentation: Classic, plain, simple label
Appearance: Medium ruby red
Nose: Big! Leather, tobacco, cherries, plums or raspberries, and some spices, perhaps, white pepper
Taste: Tannic, leather, soil/terroir, and a touch of black licorice. Most of this made its presence known on the front. After a bit of time decanting, some vanilla notes emerged.
Finish: It remained tannic, with some earth notes, then fell flat rather quickly.
Overall Impression: A nice Priorat from a well known producer. I paired it with a lovely filet mignon, which easily overpowered the wine and rendered it flat. This came as a surprise given the combination of grapes, as well as past experiences with other wines from the same, fantastic Spanish region. Nonetheless, it paired better with cheese and, as a pleasant surprise, it was even better with dark chocolate. Just for fun, I might cellar a bottle to see how it evolves.
