Wine Review – Domaine Gouron Chinon 2014

Domaine Gouron Chinon 2014 Wine BottleExpected a little more from this highly rated Chinon…

Name: Domaine Gouron

Vintage: 2014

Producer: Domaine Gouron

Region/Country: Loire, France

Grape Varietal(s): Cabernet Franc

Consumed: At home on a lovely spring evening

Recommended By: Last bin at the LCBO

Cost: $16.95

Bottle Presentation: Simple, classic label. The italic font gives it a touch of class.

Appearance: Medium hue, somewhere between purple and ruby.

Nose: Leather, red berries (raspberries and cranberries), and garrigue (in other words, a hint of green).

Taste: Light body, extra dry, medium tannins, and high acidity, with pronounced sour berries, especially cranberries, as well as cedar and savoury notes, particularly bay leaves.

Finish: Short-medium finish.

Overall Impression: We had high hopes for this Chinon wine based on the rating (90) by Wine Spectator. Unfortunately, this Cabernet Franc left us wanting more. It tasted rather one-dimensional on its own, lacking in complexity. With grilled beef, some peppery notes emerged. It might have been our bottle, but we detected a faint taste of plastic, which could have been the result of the synthetic cork. We typically enjoy wines from the Chinon region, but would try something from another producer next time.

Rating (from 70 to 100): 80/100

Value: 3/5
