Wine Review – Joel Gott Alakai Grenache 2012

Joel Gott Alakai 2012 GrenacheNew world all the way…

Name: Alakai

Vintage: 2000

Producer: Joel Gott Wines

Region/Country: California, USA

Grape Varietal(s): Grenache

Consumed: At home

Recommended by: SAQ

Cost: $25.05 CAD

Bottle Presentation: Classic, easy to read label

Appearance: Medium-dark ruby red

Nose: Initially, very fruit forward (sour cherries) with some bacon, but after a good decant, more pepper, leather, and meat came out.

Taste: Initially, again, very fruit forward. After the long decant, sour cherries were still present, but some leather and earth emerged.

Finish: Earthy and almost gritty. Some leather emerged after a long decant.

Overall Impression: A fruit forward, easy to drink wine without a great deal of complexity. It did, however, pair reasonably well with a steak-frites dinner.

Rating (from 70 to 100): 80

Value: 2/5
