Wine Review – Supreno 2013

Supreno 2013 Wine BottleYoung, full-bodied, and Intense…

Name: Supreno

Vintage: 2013

Producer: Alma – Santa Maria della Versa

Region/Country: Puglia, Italy

Grape Varietal(s): Sangiovese, Merlot

Consumed: Firegrill Restaurant, Montreal

Recommended By: An amiable waitress at the Firegrill Restaurant

Cost: $59.00

Bottle Presentation: Modern, bordering on dramatic (somehow reminiscent of Dracula), would definitely stand out on the shelf

Appearance: Medium-dark ruby

Nose: Leather, white pepper

Taste: Leather, earth, plums, tannic, with a hint of old cheddar. Anise emerged as the wine opened.

Finish: Pepper, leather, and plums, with lingering tannins.

Overall Impression: A young, full-bodied, and fairly intense wine that paired well with steak, peppercorn sauce, grilled vegetables, and garlic mashed potatoes. Although the tasting notes suggested it could be sipped on its own, we suggest it would be better when paired with a flavourful meal. Despite the emergence of anise, it had a one-dimensional nature. We would like to try this IGT again in a few years once the tannins soften.

Rating (from 70 to 100): 84/100

Value: 3/5
