2015 Te Whau The Point wine bottle

A great Bordeaux-style blend at an enticing price point…

Region/Country: Waiheke Island, New Zealand

Grape Varietal(s): Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot

Alcohol Level: 14%

Recommended By: Purchased it in a local wine shop on Waiheke Island while visiting the gorgeous area in March 2019

Cost: $21.90 NZD

Bottle Presentation: Classic, clear, and to the point

The full tasting notes are as follows:

Appearance: Medium garnet

Nose: Clean, pronounced intensity nose, with leather, fig, prunes, balsamic vinegar, cedar, black plums, black cherry, blackberry, cassis, menthol, anise, and garrigue notes. The wine continues to develop in bottle.

Palate: Dry, full bodied, medium(+) acidity, high tannins, and high alcohol. Pronounced flavour intensity had notes of olives, bay leaf, blackberry, menthol, cedar, iron, green tomatoes, old leather, and wet wood.

Finish: A medium(+) finish, that had a somewhat bitter and green back end.

Overall Impressions: A very good Bordeaux-style blend that paired beautifully with our Montreal steak spiced filet mignons, grilled zucchini, and homemade fries. For us, this wine is nicely in its drinking window. At under $22 NZD, it represents tremendous value for the money. On another note, we recently learned the winery has now closed, so if you can get your hands on any of the remaining bottles, we highly recommend it.

Rating: 89/100 A very good wine.

E-Wine rating: 4/5 We would purchase two bottles of this Bordeaux-style blend; one to drink now and one to drink over the next year or so.

Value: 5/5
